Dock cocktails

Rich and I like to have a cocktail on the dock every so often and my what a lovely night it was tonight, although a bit chilly. There is something about the setting sun that sets the buildings alight in neon and it fascinates me.

Deconstruction on the water

So we were on the boat and couldn't find a place to tie up. We decided we'll go under the bridge onto the gulf side and maybe there will be somewhere to dock. But look, there's construction even on the water! Oops, I mean de-construction. They built the new bridge and are slowly removing the old one. Noise and debris and wind, oh my!

Boating

I popped my kayak into the water this morning and it floated! The wind was quite strong and I don't have a life vest yet so I hauled it out and Rich came along and picked me up at our dock. There was a small craft warning for the gulf, but we stayed in the channel. We cruised down to St. John's Pass where there was a seafood festival only to discover there was no place to tie up the boat!

Renting

The rental market has been good to us renters, but when I saw this sign out of the sun - well, it made me pause. The beautiful palms and buildings in the reflection seem so innocent next to the sign. Innocent and pretty like a spider's web!

Fishy News

Rich signed up for a boat "club" and we took one of the boats out for a spin the other day. We threw down the anchor and he tossed out a line. He's fished off our dock too. So far the only fish hooked have been catfish, although plenty of fish have gotten away well fed!

baseball and bars

Perhaps not the most "beautiful" picture, but fun. We have had the very best restaurant recommendations from our wonderful neighbors and when they recommended a bar for the recent Rays' baseball scene, well, we HAD to go! Only it turns out the bar was right next to the stadium and mobbed. My what a "scene" it really was!! But without a place to park, and unwilling to pay $30 for the privilege, we decided a beach bar in our neighborhood would have to be good enough. It was :-D

McDonald's on the water

Madeira Beach may be the proud host of the only McDonald's with a dock. Yup, that is the McDonald's flag flying on that dock. They don't own the dock, but no-one seems to mind the boat traffic. And at this lovely sunset I witnessed a boat stop for just such a thing.

Baby, have we got bikinis!

Rich and I ventured into downtown Madeira Beach (one beach down from us). Wow. A bikini-clad young'un skateboarded past us as we dined on incredibly fresh, delicious fish at Walt's Fish Shack. Sign juxtaposed to sign and every beach chatchki possible screamed tourism. When I saw this Bikini Key store I couldn't resist sharing. It's too early in the season for the hordes of tourists, but they are ready!

Beach Bums

I've been doing lots of driving to meetings and not enough sightseeing to post. So I took the camera on one of our morning beach walks. Needless to say, we were not the first there!

Colorful Canoe

Florida seems to a have a free-spirited nature when it comes to colors, as this canoe demonstrates. And they surely are not limited to canoes. I have seen quite a few distinctly designed automobiles as well!

Salt Rock on Indian Shores

It was our anniversary on Saturday and we decided to take our neighbor's suggestion and dine at the Salt Rock Grill in Indian Shores. We had a lovely evening. A little champagne, a view of the water and a lot of fabulous seafood made it easy to have fun.

I'm just left wondering about the fellow making funny faces behind me...

Beach Beacon

So we get the Beach Beacon newspaper delivered to our house every Wednesday and this is the second or third time I've seen this guy's advertisement. I found it a little incredible!

Mailboxes

In this neck of Florida, it's not the doors that are works of art, it's the mailboxes! Not only do I see Pelicans as mailboxes, I have actually watched them from our dock as they cruise over the water and then dive in for a fish. One pelican was so close I could see the fish wiggling inside its pouch!

Beachy morning

Yesterday Rich and I discovered that the public beach access to the gulf was only 4 very-walkable blocks away from our house. Yipee!! So of course I had to go swimming. Warm water and shallow for quite a distance. Then this morning when the sun was rising I took a walk and found some fun birds enjoying the water and sand.

Tampa Turnover

Moving from Prague to hotels for a month to Tampa took more out of me than I expected. I would wake up in hotels and have to take a few moments to figure out where I was - and most importantly where the bathroom was. Now I get to wake up and check out this view. Instantly soothing it is!

The house we are renting is lovely and we've discovered wonderful coffee. We'll see if the organic eggs we bought live up to Prague's free-range, orange yolked wonders. Our landlord's decorating tastes/abilities are in question however. Just look at how she painted this brand new dock. Hmmm.
